The Fox Cities Eye Clinic (FCEC) was established by Mark C. Austin M.D. in 1995. Dr. Austin purchased Zeiss-Mueller Eye Associates and moved the clinic to its current location on Northland Avenue in January of 2000.
Our staff of experienced physicians is made up of Dr. Mark Austin, Dr. Kara Harbick, a fellowship trained Glaucoma specialist, Dr. Paul Thompson, and Dr. Rebecca Amaral. The medical staff at FCEC proudly offers state-of-the-art eye care with a friendly, caring disposition which makes you feel like family.

Our team is comprised of four doctors who are backed by several years of experience in serving the community. They take the highest levels of precaution in performing complex surgeries and administering treatment procedures for patients. Dr. Mark Austin
Dr. Austin is a board certified ophthalmologist and concentrates his practice in general ophthalmology including small incision “no stitch” cataract surgery.
He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School with honors. He performed a transitional year internship at the Marshfield Clinic and completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Austin began his practice in Appleton in 1995.
He and wife, Jill, have three children and reside in Appleton. Dr. Austin enjoys golf, skiing and jogging.
Dr. Kara Harbick
Dr. Harbick is a native of southern Illinois who returns to the Midwest after completing her ophthalmology training in Miami, FL. She received her medical degree from the University of Illinois and moved to Miami, where she completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Dr. Harbick is a board certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained glaucoma specialist who excels in laser treatment of glaucoma.
Dr. Harbick’s husband, Scott, is employed at Theda Clark Medical Center. They have one child, and together the family enjoys many outdoor activities, especially boating, jogging, and hunting.
Dr. Paul Thompson
Dr. Thompson is a graduate of New London High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University and his Doctor of Optometry degree with honors from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago.
Dr. Thompson has been the President of the Fox Valley Optometric Society and a member of the Wisconsin Optometric Association Board of Directors. He has been a leader in optometry, teaching other optometrists at educational meetings.
In addition to providing routine eye exams, Dr. Thompson enjoys medical eye care and fitting specialty contact lenses.
Dr. Rebecca Amaral
Dr. Amaral is a New London native and attended UW-LaCrosse from 1992-1995, majoring in biology. She then transferred to Indiana University and obtained a Bachelor Degree in optometry in 1997 and a Doctorate of Optometry in 1999.
Dr. Amaral is a member of Beta Sigma Honor Society, Wisconsin Optometric Association, and American Optometric Association.
Dr. Amaral provides full scope optometric care for all ages.
